‘Movies don’t create psychos, movies make psychos more creative.’ That is a quote from the 1996 horror-comedy Scream, but it was quite literally the case with Luka Magnotta, the killer of a Chinese student named Jun Lin and the subject of the recent documentary series Don’t F*ck with Cats. In this episode I recount the Magnotta case and offer my thoughts on whether psychopaths are examples of the copycat effect, and the problems of how mass media frames true crime stories, especially those about psychopathic serial killers.
