Just as with James Bond and Ian Fleming, the CIA’s CREST database is littered with reference to Tom Clancy. In preparation for this weekend’s podcast I put together a collection of over 100 pages of internal Agency memos and open source records that record Clancy’s relationship with the CIA for several years after the publication of The Hunt for Red October.
A full analysis of these documents and the importance of them will follow in the next episode of ClandesTime, but some of the highlights from the file include:
– A Washington Post article suggesting that Clancy was a secret agent
– Records from when Clancy spoke at Langley in 1986
– Letters between Clancy and several CIA chiefs of public affairs where they discussed not only Clancy’s novels but also the allegations swirling around that he had been leaked Top Secret information
