There are dozens of films about the ‘Troubles’ but very few of them engage with the covert operations run by British military and intelligence units that tell the true secret history of the conflict. In this episode I review and analyse two such films – Hidden Agenda (1990) and ‘71 (2014) – both set in Belfast, but they couldn’t be more different. I look at the real life covert operations that inspired these films and why they are both brave but ultimately quite imperfect explorations of dark history.
