Schrödinger’s Hack: The NSA’s Report on Russia Hacking the US Election
The Intercept recently published a leaked NSA report describing a cyberattack presumed to be carried out by Russia military intelligence. While many have seen this as the confirming proof that Trump only got elected because of Putin the truth is a lot more complicated. It seems the leaker wanted to get caught, and that The Intercept helped her do it.
The leaker was apparently Reality Leigh Winner, a 25 year old Air Force veteran and language specialist working for a government contractor called Pluribus International Corporation at an unidentified government facility in Georgia. Exactly why a specialist in languages spoken in Afghanistan and Pakistan would have access to, let alone be able to print, a classified Top Secret report into Russian military cyberespionage is not clear at this time.
