Just like many federal agencies the Los Angeles Police Department have a dedicated entertainment liaison office for dealing with Hollywood. In this month’s subscribercast I outline some of my findings from over 400 pages of documents released to me by the LAPD, including how the police had trademarked their badge, motto, seal and even the acronym LAPD as a means of shutting down criticism and controlling their public image. I also quickly review two LAPD-themed TV shows – The Shield, which is based on the notorious Rampart scandal, and The Rookie, which is a perfect piece of pro-police PR.
