On this Christmas edition of the subscribercast we examine the daddy of all Christmas movies – Die Hard. I outline how Die Hard is a subversive story masquerading as a Reaganite ‘pro-hero’ narrative. While on the surface the ballad of John McClaine is in keeping with the Reagan White House’s Hollywood outreach efforts, underneath lies a satire of copaganda and of the Reagan-era war on terror. I also briefly discuss the sequels and their connections to 9/11 and Iran-Contra, as well as Die Hard‘s wider cultural impact.
