In the summer of 2020 a former CIA officer published a book with the overt aim of countering the tide of fake news, but with the covert aim of influencing the presidential election. In this subscriber-only podcast I review True or False: A CIA Analyst’s Guide to Fake News, showing how almost every page of the book contains misleading information, inaccurate ‘facts’, self-defeating arguments and outright lies. We explore some of the incidents covered in the book, ranging from the Jack the Ripper murders to the building of CIA headquarters at Langley, and examine how the author – Cindy Otis – uses fake news under the guise of fighting back against it.
