The Leopold and Loeb case was one of ‘crimes of the century’, and inspired many books, plays and movies.  On this month’s subscriber-only podcast I recount the case, offer some observations about the killers, and then explore the question of upper class psychopathy through two films – Compulsion and Rope.  I discuss the contrasting depictions of the killers across this pair of movies, and why Hitchcock chose to focus on the social class element of the story while the film-makers behind Compulsion did not.
