In the first of several subscriber-only podcasts we look at season one of the unique and award-winning cop drama The Shield.  We explore its origins in the Rampart scandal, its effect on popular consumption of TV and how it heralded the beginning of the long-form drama outside of HBO.  I discuss some of my favourite aspects of The Shield, from its willingness to incorporate unconventional characters and emotionally dark, complex topics to the excellence of its writing.  Throughout we discuss the recurring theme in The Shield – the question of how far the public are willing to let the police go in the name of safety and security.
