How do you hold the police accountable if Internal Affairs are corrupt? That’s the core question in The Shield season five, which we examine on this month’s subscriber-only podcast. We discuss how the job of policing and law enforcement is essentially impossible, as both the good cops and the bad cops are in a double bind, and how accountability is a politicised delusion. As per usual we decode some of the metaphors and symbolism relating to black operations involving the US government, and how they blew back on Los Angeles and helped create the Rampart scandal, as well as looking at the new characters introduced in this season.
