I decided to do a subscriber-only review of the HBO TV series The Newsroom, with an episode looking at each of the three seasons. In this first episode I discuss my mixed feelings about the show, and its sometimes bizarre combination of idealism and pragmatism, especially when it comes to covering terrorist attacks. We also examine many of the real life events that are incorporated into the show’s storylines, either by being covered on the show-within-a-show Newsnight or incorporated into the dramatic plot. This includes the Time Square bombing attempt, the 7/7 London bombings, the tabloid phone hacking scandal and the role of the Koch brothers in astroturfing the new American right wing.
