Completing our look at the HBO series The Newsroom, we examine season 3, focusing in on the whistleblower storyline and how it both echoes and differs from the depiction of whistleblowers in the first two seasons. We look at real life events that inspired the series, including the US government practice of sending journalists to prison for refusing to name sources, targeting whistleblowers and harassing news organisations who publish controversial leaks. We thoroughly debunk the myth that no one should leak because undercover operatives will get killed, as well as looking at the problems of social media detectives and citizen journalism.
